COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Commissioner David Fuentes announced that a $7.5 million Wellness & Activity Center will be built at 1901 N. Bridge Ave in Weslaco using ARPA funds. The 26,000 square foot facility will offer gymnasiums, courts and classrooms for county employees and the public—set to open mid-January.  Rio Grande Guardian

CULTURE NEWS

  • Edinburg Conceptos Dance Ensemble will present Nuestra Herencia—a folklórico dance recital celebrating local culture—on Sept. 19 and Sept. 20 at the Edinburg ACE Center. Both events will start at 7:30 p.m. and will feature guest ensembles from local school districts with tickets costing $5 and free admission for children 10 and under; public parking will be available at City Hall.  The Edinburg Advocate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lyford High School honored 17-year-old Mario Castillo as Student of the Week for his top grades, strong leadership on the tennis and cross-country teams, and work in public speaking and mental health awareness. He plans to graduate with an associate degree, has completed a CTE Health Science internship, and traveled to Austin as part of a student advocacy council—while setting his sights on becoming a neurosurgeon.  KRGV
  • Edinburg CISD said that 533 returning students joined through Project Gateway and 502 remain enrolled, while board members pushed for new clubs & workforce training to connect with students at risk of dropping out. The district aims to lower the dropout rate to 1 percent by Sept. 26.  The Edinburg Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Texas voters will see Proposition 13 on the November ballot—this measure may raise the homestead exemption from $100,000 to $140,000 to lower tax bills while potentially straining school funding. If approved, homeowners will see the savings in their 2026 appraisals.  KRGV
  • Texas GOP chairman Abraham George said that Texans will head to the polls in about five months with several propositions on the ballot—one key idea is to phase out property taxes, a plan dropped in the last legislative session due to concerns over rising sales taxes.  KURV
  • Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed an executive order to restrict sales of THC products to protect children & uphold the rights of responsible adults. Stores that sell items like gas station gummies and vapes now must check IDs like for alcohol, and officials say the rule will impact local sales & promote responsible buying.  KURV
  • The Region 15 Flood Planning Group—which includes Hidalgo County Precinct 1 Commissioner David Fuentes and was created by the Texas Water Development Board—held a public meeting Wednesday at Weslaco City Hall to gather feedback on flooding in the Rio Grande Valley. The group will use this input to improve flood risk maps and plan projects aimed at reducing flooding.  KRGV

  • Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Edinburg received a 500-thousand-dollar donation from the Knapp Community Care Foundation Tuesday—its Development Foundation will match the gift to set up the Mid-Valley Pediatric Assistance Endowment that helps cover travel, lodging and medicine costs for pediatric patients and their families.  KURV
  • The Rio Grande Valley Diabetes Association will host a free diabetes education panel Tuesday, Sept. 23 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at 3200 N. 23rd St. + local experts will explain ways to prevent diabetes and reduce its complications.  KRGV

SPORTS NEWS

  • UTRGV Football won against Prairie View for a 2-0 start and will face Langston at 7 p.m. Saturday at Robert Janet Vacker Stadium. Arch Manning scored five touchdowns and his coach said his shoulder was fine, & NFL rookie JJ McCarthy and MLB teams also posted strong finishes.  FOX RGV
