- ➤ The City of Edinburg's Library and Cultural Arts Department partners with H-E-B’s Operation Appreciation to host a Military Spouse Appreciation Day event on Friday, May 9, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library at 1906 S. Closner Blvd. The event — limited to military spouses who register in advance — will feature a painting session, hors d'oeuvres, mocktails, raffles, and giveaways to honor their sacrifices. - ➤ Judge Cortez and Mayor Garza say Zoho Corporation will expand in Edinburg by buying 1,050 acres north of the city to build a tech campus and by purchasing the old Echo Hotel downtown to create modern offices while keeping its historic structure—officials say the move will boost local economic development. - ➤ Nineteen-year-old Angel David Salas-Herrera was arrested Friday in Cameron County after a pursuit and crash when he and a juvenile driver were found in an Edinburg Jeep reported stolen—he now faces federal charges for allegedly planning to export stolen vehicles after providing the location of two other stolen cars intended for the Gulf Cartel. - ➤ Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District will host its 36th Annual Parent/Youth Mental Health and Wellness Fair tomorrow at Robert Vela High School — the free event runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and offers mental health resources, interactive exhibits, and other educational activities for students and their families. - ➤ UTRGV held a ribbon cutting for its new 14,000-square-foot Advanced Manufacturing Research Facility on May 5 at its Edinburg campus where students, university leaders, and local officials celebrated a center built to boost manufacturing research and technology development. The renovated facility cost over $3 million and is outfitted with industry-grade equipment valued at 15—20 million; it will operate 24 hours to support projects like integrated energy systems and future collaboration with South Texas College. - ➤ TxDOT warns local drivers to ignore scam texts that claim unpaid toll fees — the agency told drivers it never sends toll payment requests via SMS or email and advised them to delete any such messages and report scams to the FTC. FOX RGV
- ➤ Several cities in our region need a second vote after Saturday’s municipal election. Runoff elections will be held on June 7—two Brownsville City Commission seats and the mayoralty in Primera in Cameron County, and the mayor and two council seats in Sullivan plus one seat on the San Juan City Commission in Hidalgo County remain open.
