COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On November 19th, Hidalgo Early College High School's Medical Club held its annual Thanksgiving food drive and collected a record 28 turkeys along with canned foods and essentials to help families in need. The items were organized on campus and given to school social workers for distribution before Thanksgiving.  MyRGV.com

BUSINESS NEWS

  • UTRGV's Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization was named Global Chapter of the Year at the 42nd Annual CEO Global Conference in Tampa+ the group credited its innovative partnership with the RGV Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for the honor. It will launch a mentorship program that matches students with experienced business leaders+ an effort aimed at sparking entrepreneurial growth in the region.  Rio Grande Guardian

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Construction in Edinburg grew by more than 32% over last year after permit valuations reached $364.3 million for residential, multi-family and commercial projects. City officials said the rise comes from strategic planning and infrastructure improvements — showing the city’s strong economic growth.  Rio Grande Guardian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • La Joya ISD proposed closing five schools because enrollment fell by 8,000 in the past ten years—Benevides, Pena, and Leo Elementary and Ann Richards Middle Schools will close while J.D. Salinas Middle becomes a career academy. The district will hold public meetings before a final vote in January and expects to save over $27 million if the plan moves forward.  KURV
  • UTRGV graduate Laura Aguilera received the 2025 Stacie McGee Student Scholar Award for her work promoting student well-being at La Joya ISD. Her experience as a teen mom and first-generation student drives her efforts to gather food for families during the holiday season — and she also serves on the superintendent's advisory committee to shape school policy.  KRGV

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Payne Family from Payne Auto Group gave $1 million to Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley to set up its new Pediatric Residency Program for training local pediatricians. The donation will fund educational resources and training for residents who will begin in July 2026 — and the hospital renamed its café to honor the gift.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Edinburg Public Library will host a weekend of free line dancing, family story time and arts and crafts from Nov. 24 through Nov. 26—activities that library staff say will improve balance, strength and overall health for residents of all ages.  The Edinburg Advocate
