COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Food Bank RGV CEO Libby Saenz stressed the need for canned goods and non-perishable items to feed families facing food insecurity this holiday season—Thanksgiving is 17 days away and Christmas is 45 days away. The food bank urges donors to contribute, as donated items will support community efforts during this busy time—helping local families in need.  KRGV
  • Edinburg crews begin work today to install six canopies and two workout stations along the Chapin Hike and Bike Trail—each canopy will have a bench and water fountain—to support trail users, with the project set to finish in two weeks, according to Parks Manager Eddie Salinas.  KRGV

  • Today, the SBDC Smart Start webinar will help local entrepreneurs learn to start a business with clear steps on market fit and money needs plus one-on-one advising from experts. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Walker Smith, the Port of Harlingen director, gave an in-depth presentation at the South Texas Manufacturers Association meeting at the Harlingen Convention Center and said every dollar invested in Texas ports returns over $53 while cutting down on road traffic. He noted that the port supports more than 25,000 jobs, handles 1.8 million tons of fuel and 323,000 tons of sand, and plans $30 million in upgrades including 14,500 feet of new track—demonstrating that water port investments pay big dividends.  Rio Grande Guardian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • L&F Distributors donated $10K to the UTRGV student pantry on Saturday + funds raised from an October promotional event helped support more than 100 students who visit the pantry each week.  KURV
  • The Edinburg CISD Board will meet today at 6 p.m. at the ECISD Administration Building to elect new officers, review contracts for technology, library services, and special education equipment — and vote on a resolution for the Hidalgo County Appraisal District Board election. A closed session on personnel matters, including employment recommendations for a payroll coordinator and a new principal at Flores/Zapata Elementary School, will follow the superintendent’s report and program recognitions.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • Integrity Auto Repair Workshop will be held on November 22nd from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at 215 E. Canton in Edinburg—attendees will learn automotive basics like jump starting vehicles, checking fluids, changing a spare tire and installing spark plugs—and have a chance to win prizes.  Rio Grande Guardian

  • The Dustin M. Sekula Memorial Library will switch to the new TLC system on Nov. 12 to offer a smoother experience for library patrons. Current SML cardholders can keep accessing SML resources—while those using HCLS branches must get a separate card—and non-SML patrons can receive a new card at no cost as services like courtesy return and ShareIt continue.  The Edinburg Advocate

  • Dr. Melany Castillo of DHR Health explains that after a diabetes diagnosis, residents in the Rio Grande Valley must learn about blood sugar control, medications, and lifestyle changes—measures aimed at managing a condition affecting 43% of local adults. She advises patients to schedule comprehensive assessments, including blood tests and checkups, to create personalized treatment plans—guidance that helps in reducing long-term complications.  Rio Grande Guardian

SPORTS NEWS

  • The City of Edinburg Parks and Recreation Department announced that registration for the 2025 Winter Baseball and Softball League closes on Thursday, Nov. 14 — teams in divisions 6U, 8U, 10U, and 12U must pay a $350 entry fee. Games will begin on Nov. 24 and teams must supply their own uniforms and equipment.  The Edinburg Advocate
