COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Edinburg Police Department will host a three-day women’s self-defense course for participants ages 18 and older on Nov. 3, 5, and 7 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Police Training Facility—learners will practice practical safety skills as part of the nationally recognized R.A.D. BUSINESS NEWS

  • James Avery Artisan Jewelry, a well-known Texas brand, will open its first Edinburg store at The Shoppes at Rio Grande Valley in a 3,300-square-foot space at 427 E. Trenton Road—construction will begin in December with completion targeted for March; the new store will mark the brand’s debut in our city.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • On November 14, RioPlex in Pharr will host a groundbreaking event for La Bonanza Avocados with more than 20 business leaders from Michoacán expected to attend. The ceremony will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a welcome and speeches from the mayor, chairman Joaquin Spammer, and Luis Bazan—ending with a photo, blessing, and networking at 5:40 p.m.  Rio Grande Guardian

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Friends of the Edinburg Library will host a paranormal-themed Brown Bag Lunch on Nov. 3 at noon at the Dustin M. Sekula Memorial Library. Revenant Watch Paranormal will lead the presentation Hauntings of the RGV as part of National Friends of Libraries Week.  The Edinburg Advocate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Edinburg CISD Board of Trustees met on Oct.28 to review student enrollment figures, local health updates, and personnel matters for district schools. They reported a drop in enrollment, a 95.7% vaccination rate from 14 vaccine clinics, approved contracts and hires, and held a moment of silence for a Truman Elementary student—further decisions will be made at the next board meeting in mid-November.  The Edinburg Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • VIDA secured a $350,000 Texas Talent Connection Grant from Governor Greg Abbott’s Office and Texas Workforce Commissioner Representing Labor, Albert Treviño, III, presented the check this past Thursday morning & the funding will help 350 Rio Grande Valley residents earn credentials in high-demand healthcare jobs through partnerships with 13 regional hospitals.  Rio Grande Guardian
