- ➤ Elsa city leaders approved a $4 million, 20,000-square-foot community center near Mario Leal Park set to open in October — the new facility will offer tutoring, computer labs, wellness programs and an emergency shelter during severe weather for residents of Edcouch, Elsa, La Villa and Monte Alto. - ➤ Edinburg and the EEDC announced plans today to build a new Workforce Resource Center and modern clubhouse at Ebony Hills Golf Course located at 300 W. Palm Drive. Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. said the project—funded through EEDC bond funds—will support job training and community engagement as officials finalize construction details and select a management firm. - ➤ Channel 5 News is commemorating the 55th anniversary of the plane crash on October 23rd, 1970 — the event that destroyed the shrine of Our Lady of San Juan Del Valle and led priests to risk their lives to save a three-foot statue untouched by fire. The basilica was later rebuilt around the recovered statue — a cherished symbol for pilgrims. KRGV
- ➤ Channel 5 News recalled a tragic plane crash from 55 years ago when a plane hit the Shrine of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle and started a fire that caused over $1 million in damage—historian Francisco Guajardo said the event changed local faith and led to the building of today’s Basilica. - ➤ On Monday morning, the Texas Department of Public Safety rode along with McAllen ISD school buses to enforce safety laws after five school bus accidents in the Rio Grande Valley and cited at least one driver for not stopping when the bus extended its stop arm—fines range from $500 to $1,250 with repeat violations facing harsher penalties. DPS and McAllen ISD urge drivers to stop in both directions to help keep children safe. KRGV

- ➤ Steve Ortiz from Weslaco is raising awareness for Multiple System Atrophy after his wife, Liliana Zapata, died on September 16 following a six-year battle with the rare disease. He urges others to keep fighting for proper health care as they seek answers. KRGV
- ➤ Health experts recommend measles vaccines for Valley children after an outbreak in West Texas earlier this year caused over 700 cases—and two child deaths. Dr. Umesh Pathak of Weslaco warned that misinformation continues to affect some parents while local Kindergartners' vaccination rates range from 93% to 100%, with Edinburg CISD at 94.5%. KRGV
- ➤ Channel 5 News and South Texas Health System launched the Heart of the Valley campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
