  • Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. and Veronica Gonzales were named the Chamber's 2025 Man and Woman of the Year for their leadership and service — they will be honored at the Centennial Installation and Awards Banquet on Nov. 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the Region One Education Service Center.  The Edinburg Advocate

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Edinburg Cultural Arts Division will launch the final 2025 session of free arts, dance and wellness classes at the ACE Center starting Monday, Oct. 13. Participants can join a six-week slate featuring watercolor, charcoal drawing, colored pencils, printmaking, guitar, ballet, folklórico and flamenco — while one Sip and Paint workshop is a paid session.  The Edinburg Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Edinburg will break ground on a three-level downtown parking garage at McIntyre Street and Closner Boulevard on Friday, Oct. 10 at 9:30 a.m.—the $6.2 million project includes 256 parking spaces and will take 12 months to complete. The project received a $2 million contribution from the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation and is intended to ease congestion while supporting central business district access.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • McAllen City Commissioner Victor 'Seby' Haddad announced his candidacy for Texas House District 41 since state Rep. R.D. 'Bobby' Guerra will not seek re-election, and Haddad said he will use his local government and business experience to support families and build community—focusing on infrastructure and business growth.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Hidalgo County Precinct 4 Commissioner Ellie Torres will host a live talk show tomorrow at 2 p.m. featuring fire chiefs who will discuss home fire safety, lithium-ion battery risks and youth volunteerism. Viewers can watch the event live on Facebook and YouTube — part of Fire Prevention Month meant to promote community safety.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • Commissioner Ellie Torres announced she is running for a third term with a focus on drainage and roadway projects in Precinct 4. She secured over $39 million for key drainage efforts and paved more than 100 county roads—moves she will build on with new federal funds and local partnerships.  MyRGV.com
  • Monday was the last day to register for November elections and the Cameron County Elections Office — sharing ballot details from votetexas.gov — is urging Edinburg voters to learn about the propositions and 17 proposed constitutional amendments. Harlingen resident Miguel Angel Covarrubias said he plans to review the policies to help drive improvements like better trash pickups and street lighting.  KRGV
  • State Rep. Vikki Goodwin held a Meet the Candidate event at Roosevelt's at 7 in McAllen as part of her campaign for lieutenant governor. Goodwin said she would support public schools by expanding the Homes for Texas Heroes program—aimed at helping more first responders and teachers—and address water issues in Texas, with the event organized by Thomas Ray Garcia.  Rio Grande Guardian

  • Erika Galan—a Weslaco mom and breast cancer survivor—was diagnosed with stage 2 triple-negative breast cancer after a car seat accident led her to find a lump in July 2020. Now recovered and active, she urges women to get early mammogram screenings to catch the disease sooner.  KRGV
  • Dr. Roxana Mohhebali-Solis says that annual wellness exams help find breast cancer, cervical cancer, and other health issues early+ these exams also check blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes risks. Women in Edinburg are encouraged to schedule their yearly checkup to catch problems before they become serious.  Rio Grande Guardian
