- ➤ American Legion Alfredo Gonzalez Post 408 will host the 48th cookoff on Nov. 1 at the Edinburg Amphitheater. - ➤ The Museum of South Texas History invites the community to attend the ¡Fandango! Legacy of Learning event aimed at preserving regional stories. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 6:30 p.m.— local residents are invited to join in celebrating our region's heritage. KRGV
- ➤ Weslaco native Gume Laurel is a finalist for three International Latino Book Awards for his poetry collection Assimilated Narratives which explores borderland identity. He will compete for recognition on October 25 in Oceanside—focusing his work on highlighting the Latino experience in the region. KRGV

- ➤ The Texas Tribune sponsored the 'Preserving the RGV’s Economic Miracle' event at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance where local business leaders discussed rising housing costs, tariff challenges, and immigration enforcement issues that affect regional growth—experts said wages and workforce training must improve to keep pace with the market. - ➤ Edinburg CISD is asking students, staff and families to wear orange every Wednesday in October to honor National Bullying Prevention Month. The campaign aims to boost kindness and respect on school campuses—educators say this visible effort will help prevent bullying by encouraging everyone to speak up against unkind behavior. - ➤ More than 32,000 customers of East Rio Hondo Water Supply Corporation will see their water bills increase in December as a rate study—expected to conclude after mid-October—guides the adjustment based on average household use of about 6,000 gallons per month. The change is planned to help pay off nearly $58 million in water project debt and could raise an extra $2 million in revenue each year. KRGV
- ➤ The Hidalgo County Commissioners Court approved an order on Tuesday, September 30 banning roadside sales of non-livestock animals in unincorporated areas to protect public safety and animal welfare. Violators face Class C misdemeanor charges—each day of noncompliance is a separate offense and offending structures may be removed. KRGV
- ➤ Hidalgo County plans to end its free Wi-Fi service in 130 rural colonias by the end of 2025 due to expired COVID funding—LUPE members and local residents protested because the service is essential for schoolwork. County officials say restoring it would require taxpayer funds while LUPE calls for a study to explore new options. KRGV
- ➤ Edinburg officials said a $6.2 million parking garage for the new Hidalgo County Courthouse was scheduled to start in September but had not begun as of Sept. 30 along Closner Boulevard — McIntyre Street, where the three-story structure will be built. County commissioners paved a nearby parking lot with nearly $300K to ease parking issues and an official construction date will be announced at a city council meeting in early October as the design now removes storefronts and limits parking to 250 spaces. - ➤ The Texas Department of Public Safety—known for strict enforcement—announced that it halted issuing, renewing, or reissuing commercial driver licenses for non-domiciled applicants, including refugees, asylees, or DACA recipients, in response to a federal rule change.
