- ➤ Edinburg Parks & Recreation released the Fall/Winter Activity Guide that lists sports leagues, fitness classes and holiday events for residents to enjoy during the cooler months—residents can call the department for more details. The Edinburg Advocate
- ➤ Edinburg Police and local faith groups launched the Faith & Blue Blanket Drive to collect new blankets for families in need across the Rio Grande Valley. Donations are accepted at drop-off sites in Edinburg and San Juan and will end at First Baptist Church on Oct 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.—blankets will go to residents in need. The Edinburg Advocate
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Vanguard Academy ended its contract with food provider Ordo after parents complained about spoiled milk, cold meals and pests in meals for students+ The school now uses a temporary vendor and will begin bidding for a new provider on Oct. 1 while asking for more feedback from families. KRGV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Edinburg voters will hear from mayoral candidates at a public forum hosted by Futuro RGV on Sept. 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the Edinburg Municipal Auditorium — officials hope the event will boost voter participation before the Nov. 4 election. The Edinburg Advocate
- ➤ Governor Greg Abbott signed proclamations on Tuesday awarding $18 million for Mid-Valley Airport expansion in Weslaco — $10 million for a runway extension and $8 million for water and drainage improvements. Weslaco Mayor Adrian Gonzalez joined the announcement and later gave Abbott a key to the city. KRGV
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Fans noticed empty seats during sold-out football games at Vackar Stadium — officials explained that season ticket holders may not attend every game and that empty seats also occur when fans leave for food or restrooms, with fewer than a hundred tickets sold on secondary markets. KRGV
