COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Mission's Shary Municipal Golf Course is receiving a $3 million upgrade with new grass, lighting and two extra golf holes to allow evening play—funded by the Mission Economic Development Corporation—and the renovations are set to finish by the end of November weather permitting. KRGV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Museum of South Texas History in Edinburg opened a new exhibit called The Right To Learn that shows the history of education in South Texas. The exhibit features videos and Rubén Hinojosa’s donated desk — a piece of history that tells how education grew in the region. KRGV
- ➤ The Edinburg CISD Board approved changes to the employee health plan and new premium rates for 2026 on Sept. 18 after a presentation compared current benefits with those of other districts—officials said that staff will be informed via FAQs in English and Spanish and targeted meetings at auxiliary departments. - ➤ UTRGV celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by highlighting its B3 Scholar program at Saturday’s Vaqueros football game against the Texas Wesleyan Rams—drawing attention to how the program helped students build bilingual skills through specialized coursework. - ➤ Edinburg City Council approved a balanced budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year on September 18 and kept the property tax rate at 63 cents per $100 valuation — a move that provided a 3% pay raise for city workers and funds for police, fire, utility, and infrastructure projects. - ➤ Ben Cox, the UTRGV football video coordinator, moved 1,500 miles from Utah Tech University to join the Vaqueros and films practice and game day video to help coaches review plays + he also manages sideline tablets and end zone footage for school-wide review ahead of Saturday's game. KRGV
- ➤ McAllen High School head coach Patrick Shelby said on September 20th that the new UTRGV Division 1 football team created fresh opportunities for local high school players—boosting their access and exposure in the Valley—and set a stronger focus on college football in the region. KRGV
- ➤ Former Channel 5 News sports director Joel Villanueva returned to the Rio Grande Valley after a five-year absence and discussed UTRGV's new football team with current Sports Director KJ Doyle on September 20. He shared his thoughts on how the team's arrival will affect local sports coverage. KRGV
- ➤ On Saturday, September 20, UTRGV head coach Travis Bush spoke with Channel 5 News to discuss the final non‐conference game against Texas Wesleyan—his comments highlighted the Vaqueros facing a final test before Southland Conference matchups began. KRGV
- ➤ Marcos Regalado, the running backs coach for UTRGV, returned to the Valley after reconnecting with head coach Travis Bush last year and now guides the Vaqueros offense with pride.
