  • James C. Harrington, founder of the Texas Civil Rights Project, spoke at a book-signing event at the España restaurant in McAllen where he introduced his new book 'The Texas Civil Rights Project: How We Built a Social Justice Movement.' FINANCE NEWS

  • Consumer Reports advises Edinburg drivers to use apps like GasBuddy to compare gas prices and to choose stations off the highway for better deals—using premium fuel only if required. They also recommend keeping a half-tank during cold weather or storms, checking tire pressure, and removing extra cargo to get more mileage.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jonathan Lee Salinas filed on Aug. 18 to run for mayor with a campaign focused on working-class interests such as abolishing property taxes, fighting for immigrant worker amnesty, and pausing evictions. He has lived in Edinburg since 2017 and his campaign seeks to give working people a stronger voice in City Hall.  MyRGV.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Knapp Community Care Foundation has donated $500,000 to create the Mid-Valley Pediatric Assistance Endowment—which Driscoll Children’s Hospital will match for a total of $1 million. The fund will help cover travel, lodging and pharmaceutical costs for families needing specialized pediatric care.  Rio Grande Guardian
