EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ La Joya ISD expanded its after school program at Evangelina Garza and Seguin elementary schools to offer sports such as volleyball and basketball along with educational enrichment, meals and a bus ride home. Over 250 students are enrolled so far and the district is planning to add more coaches as demand rises while students must maintain good grades and behavior. KRGV
- ➤ Former KRGV-TV anchor Rick Diaz recalled that the Houston Astros may have copied PSJA’s Oso Dome when they built the Astrodome in 1965—saying its design featured clear views and air conditioning that set a new standard. At a groundbreaking ceremony for the auditorium’s renovation, PSJA officials said construction is underway to update the dome with seating for nearly 1,200—bringing modern sound and lighting to honor its rich history. - ➤ Mario Reyna for the Prosperity Task Force is urging Region One Education Service Center colleagues to volunteer by visiting homes on Sept. 20 and Sept. 27 to encourage dropout students to enroll at The PossAble Dream Adult High School — a public school offering adult diploma programs, industry certifications, and job support. The outreach will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the school headquarters in Pharr. Rio Grande Guardian

- ➤ Tejano star Bobby Pulido, an Edinburg native, announced his run for Texas' 15th Congressional District on Wednesday—challenging Rep. Monica De La Cruz in a district covering South Texas. He traveled to nine counties and said rising costs and immigration issues have hurt the local economy. MyRGV.com
- ➤ Edinburg and Hidalgo County Precinct 4 are upgrading Trenton Road, Monte Cristo Road and Schunior Road to boost safety and regional connectivity—combining a $12.6 million investment with varying project schedules. Trenton Road upgrades will complete by fall 2030, Monte Cristo Road construction will start in spring 2026, and Schunior Road work will finish by 2029. The Edinburg Advocate
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Health officials in the Rio Grande Valley are monitoring rising cases of Candida auris, a drug-resistant fungus that puts hospital and nursing home patients at risk. Hidalgo County reported 150 cases and Cameron County 40 cases so far — officials plan to enforce isolation and disinfection steps as cases are expected to increase — to keep vulnerable patients safe. - ➤ Precinct 4 and the AltaCair Foundation will host a free San Carlos Community Health Fair at 107 Sunflower Rd in Edinburg on Sept. 23 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to promote healthy living with free screenings, lab services (attendees needing lab tests should arrive fasting) and other community resources (including workforce development and emergency-preparedness information).
