- ➤ Food Bank RGV will host its Empty Bowls 2025 event on Oct. 21 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg—featuring food tastings from over 30 local restaurants, live music and a silent auction with H-E-B Hunger Relief presenting the event. KRGV
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Ruby Anne, a Brownsville police officer with over 20 years of service, has made a mark in Tejano music by performing with AB Quintanilla, winning awards, and being considered for a Latin Grammy. She remains proud of her roots—her work in law enforcement and on stage shows her commitment to the community. KRGV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The State Board of Education approved a social studies plan on Friday that emphasizes Texas and US history over international subjects. Board members will soon work on creating standards that explain what students should learn at each grade level. KURV
- ➤ Edinburg CISD Board President David Torres was elected founding chairman of the new South Texas School Board Association—a coalition of local trustees that met in Brownsville on September 16th. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Hidalgo County will end its free Wi‑Fi program for rural areas by the end of 2025 because COVID‑19 era funding ended — county Judge Richard Cortez said continuing the service would require taxpayer funds. Residents needing internet connectivity should use libraries and other public areas. KRGV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Two chronic cases of Chagas have been detected in our area, though officials say the patients contracted the illness before moving here. Researchers from Texas A&M and the state health department will ask the federal government to reclassify the disease as endemic—unlocking vital resources for better testing and prevention. KRGV
