Texas lawmakers sent House Bill 8 to Gov. Abbott’s desk to replace the STAAR test with three shorter exams that students will start taking in the 2027-28 school year, and the bill eliminates the graduation requirement for English II while speeding up test score returns.
The changes aim to lower student stress and free up classroom time — a shift designed to better track academic progress.
County officials opened the valley’s first OnMed CareStation at the McAllen clinic on Sept.
3—using telehealth to let residents check vital signs and speak with a doctor in real time. The station offers no-cost primary care for residents age 2 and up and is a joint effort with Molina Healthcare.
