CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Former Edinburg municipal judge Katherine Garcia Perez and her husband pleaded not guilty to drug possession charges linked to a 2022 fire at their business property—lawyers say the seized items were CBD that may have turned to THC and that they were released on $1,000 personal recognizance bonds. - ➤ Police in Mission are investigating a deadly Labor Day crash around 9:30 p.m. Monday on the 100 block of Slabough Avenue—where a 24-year-old driver in a red Chevy Avalanche was ejected after hitting a parked car and pronounced dead, with speed suspected as a factor. KURV
- ➤ Authorities arrested several suspects in a human smuggling attempt off Quintana Road Tuesday night—Homeland Security took part in the investigation as two drivers were caught and others scattered into a mobile home park in the same area where 53 people died in 2022. KURV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ PSJA ISD began a nearly $6 million renovation project on the historic Osodome Auditorium yesterday to restore the landmark that served generations of local students and parents. The work will update the facility with new heating & cooling systems, a redesigned entrance, ramps, seating for about 1,200 visitors, and acoustic paneling for student performances, with construction set to finish by next fall. - ➤ At San Isidro High School, 17-year-old Estrella Martinez is named Student of the Week because she ranks second in her class and leads as student council president, FCCLA vice president, and UIL competitor—she also excels in volleyball, cross-country, and cheerleading. She beat early challenges, finds strength in her sister’s fight with a brain tumor, and dreams of becoming a physical therapist. KRGV

- ➤ South Texas Health System will hold its third annual Chalk the Walk Hope & Inspiration Walk on September 13 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at STHS Behavioral on 2102 W. Trenton Road in Edinburg — the event is part of suicide awareness month. KRGV
