CRIME NEWS

  • Elsa police arrested 48-year-old Ruben Diaz after a high-speed chase that began with a missed traffic stop and found seven grams of cocaine and drug paraphernalia in his vehicle—he now faces charges for evading and resisting arrest with a bond set at $165,000.  FOX RGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • All four South Texas ISD high schools earned spots among the state’s top 100 after U.S. News and World Report released rankings on August 29—Science Academy in Mercedes ranked 30th, Medical Professions in Olmito 76th, Health Professions in Mercedes 84th, and World Scholars in Edinburg 94th. The rankings measured factors like college readiness, state tests and graduation rates.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • The Texas Senate passed House Bill 8 on Wednesday that will replace the STAAR test with three shorter exams after making a change in the social studies section—voted twenty-one to five. The bill now returns to the Texas House and will go to Governor Greg Abbott for his signature if agreed.  KURV
  • Edinburg CISD's health science program has received a $350,000 grant from the Texas Workforce Commission to buy 12 interactive mannequins—advanced training tools that will help students gain hands-on experience and prepare for future medical careers.  KRGV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Vaquero Outfitters in Edinburg is selling out officially licensed UTRGV football merchandise ahead of the Vaqueros' inaugural game today—300 daily shoppers have rushed in and new orders for restock have been placed to meet rising demand. Sales have doubled compared to last year as the store prepares for the big game.  KRGV
  • The City of Edinburg will open team-only registration on Oct. 13 for its Winter Baseball & Softball League — offering divisions for 6U, 8U, 10U and 12U and a $350 team fee while teams supply their own uniforms and equipment — with the season set to begin on Nov. 24; for more details, call 956 381 5631.  The Edinburg Advocate
