  • Guiding Hands Project built a new wheelchair ramp for Juan Perez after his family asked for help to improve his home access due to his osteomyelitis—this marks the nonprofit's seventh project this year and they plan to support further maintenance.  FOX RGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • VIDA celebrated its 30th anniversary—supporting adult learners across South Texas—by offering financial and emotional guidance to low-income families facing challenges like tuition, childcare, and transportation. The program helps adults overcome obstacles so they can pursue better education and work opportunities.  FOX RGV
  • The University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley moved up to 11th on Niche-dot-com’s list of best Texas colleges after being ranked 12th last year—Rice University ranked first, followed by UT-Austin and Texas A&M.  KURV
  • Trustees at Edinburg CISD approved joining the South Texas School Board Association after a board meeting presentation by former State Board member Ruben Cortez—who explained the group will unite local boards to influence education policy. Board members debated a $20,000 fee and staffing plans while some residents questioned the use of district funds for lobbying.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • Edinburg CISD is now offering a full-day pre-kindergarten program for 3- and 4-year-olds at all 31 elementary schools and providing free transportation for eligible students—this program builds academic, physical and social-emotional skills for kindergarten readiness while teachers receive a $5,000 pay raise from a new Texas House bill that makes their salaries the highest in the Rio Grande Valley.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Edinburg Police have launched a new Safety Sticker Program that offers free color-coded decals to alert first responders to residents with conditions such as diabetes+ Alzheimer’s or developmental disabilities. The program, developed with the Mental Health Unit and local advocates, is available at police headquarters at 1702 S. Closner Blvd to improve emergency responses.  The Edinburg Advocate

  • Dr. Romanelli from DHR Health in Edinburg explains that strong core muscles, which keep your body steady, help athletes prevent injuries during sports. He says that if an athlete feels pain, they should get tested and try special exercises+to fix weak spots.  MyRGV.com
  • The Edinburg Bobcats are set to face the Mercedes Tigers today at Richard Flores Stadium with both teams ready to start the high school football season—Mercedes aims to avenge last year’s loss.
