COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the Edinburg Fire Department’s Emergency Management team is hosting a community preparedness chat from 9 to 11 a.m. at 107 Café, 4129 W. University Drive—residents will meet emergency personnel and get tips for protecting their families during disasters.  The Edinburg Advocate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Edinburg CISD will require clear backpacks, add metal detectors, and station armed police officers at every elementary school for the upcoming school year—measures that will also ban cell phones and smartwatches to secure all 44 campuses.  KRGV
  • UTRGV is launching a new series of surveys for SAM program students to assess skills like time management, organization, and campus navigation. The Student Accessibility Service will use the feedback to tailor support—checking in at the start, midterm, and end of the academic year.  KRGV
  • Edinburg CISD trustees approved a $306 million balanced budget for 2025–26 on Tuesday—lowering the property tax rate from $0.8727 to $0.8617 per $100 valuation and increasing starting teacher pay to $58,000 amid debate over librarian salaries. Trustees may revisit additional compensation later if enrollment and attendance numbers improve.  The Edinburg Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Edinburg City Hall yesterday, mayoral and city council candidates drew their ballot positions for the November municipal election. Voters must register by October 6 and begin early voting on October 20 for ballots to be cast or mailed — key steps for Edinburg residents to participate.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • Edinburg officials broke ground on the nearly $2 million Chapin Pumps Rehabilitation Project near Chapin Street and Sugar Road — the state-funded project will install two pumps that move 24,000 gallons per minute to protect about 2,000 residents and finish construction in summer.  KRGV
  • A major drainage project on Ebony Lane is behind schedule after crews discovered unlabeled utility lines that left large holes in the street and worried residents. City Engineer Mardoqueo Hinojosa said repaving will finish early September and the full Doolittle Detention Pond Project will complete in October—funded by a $3 million bond approved in 2018.  KRGV
