- ➤ The Texas Department of Public Safety released details about a deadly motorcycle crash near Alton — 19-year-old Giovanni Rios lost control at 5:30 p.m. Saturday on Trinidad Lane in Mission after hitting a curb and a light pole — and investigators said he was traveling at an unsafe speed. KURV

- ➤ RGV Wings, a new restaurant on 2113 W. Trenton Road, opened about a month ago in Edinburg and now serves boneless wings with Elote and garlic parmesan flavors along with other menu items. It aims to attract local football fans excited for the upcoming season—operating daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. MyRGV.com
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Federal immigration authorities in the Rio Grande Valley arrested 78 people during Operation Pick-Off, which began Friday and continued through the weekend—65 were taken for suspected illegal reentry after removal and prior convictions for human smuggling and drug offenses. KURV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UTRGV was ranked number 7 nationally and number 1 in Texas for the third straight year in Washington Monthly’s 2025 College Guide — a ranking that recognizes its commitment to affordable access and strong student outcomes. The Edinburg Advocate
- ➤ Edinburg CISD received a $350K grant from the Jobs and Education for Texans program and used the funds to update its health science courses—purchasing new training tools and equipment that helped over 500 students prepare for health-care careers. The Edinburg Advocate
- ➤ The Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library will host a free workshop series for women starting Sept. 2 that runs every Tuesday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. + the series covers career exploration, online job platforms, resume writing and professional appearance, and it will end with a career fair on Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. to noon with a complimentary interview outfit and certificate for participants who complete it. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Edinburg held a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday at 10 a.m. to begin a flood relief project at the corner of Chapin Street and Sugar Road where new pumps will move 24,000 gallons per minute over more than 500 acres to serve nearly 2,000 residents. The nearly $2M project is funded in part by a $1M grant from the Texas General Land Office—completion is expected by summer 2026. KRGV
- ➤ Governor Greg Abbott plans to change rules so pharmacies can sell Ivermectin to improve access for residents. The drug has been approved for decades to treat parasitic infections + its use against COVID remains unproven. KURV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Edinburg will host a free prostate cancer wellness event on Tuesday, September 2 at the ACE Center — 315 W. McIntyre — from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month; Mayor Ramiro Garza, a prostate cancer survivor, will advise men to get screened amid American Cancer Society figures predicting over 300000 new cases and 35000 deaths in 2025.
