CRIME NEWS

  • Forty-year-old Eguaciso Luna Junior was charged with intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault after a Tuesday crash at the intersection of Decker and McColl roads in Hidalgo that killed one man and injured several others, with his bond set at $350,000.  KURV
  • A 22-year-old Edinburg man pleaded guilty to murder for kidnapping and killing 37-year-old Teodoro Martinez, who was found dead in a burning GMC Envoy near Val Verde Road, and he was sentenced to 15 years in prison—crediting about 3½ years already served.  MyRGV.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • South Texas College is integrating AI into its programs as part of its Strategic Plan, and it has formed an AI Task Force—led by interim VP Jesus Campos—to guide ethical use and boost workforce readiness through microcredentialing in the BAT-CIT program. These steps aim to prepare students for a workforce that increasingly demands AI skills.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • South Texas College received a $467K grant from the National Science Foundation to set up a cybersecurity clinic—students in the program will provide free risk assessments, response planning and training to the community over three years.  KURV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Lorena Flores-Hernandez from UT Health RGV urged Edinburg parents yesterday to schedule routine eye exams for their children as school begins since unchecked vision issues can affect learning. She noted that signs like squinting or eye rubbing—key indicators for early detection—may hint at problems worsened by screen time.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • A free community event to learn about diabetes and dialysis is happening today at the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Health experts including Dr. Ali Abdul Kareem, Dr. Liliana E. SPORTS NEWS

  • UTRGV athletics will offer enhanced free parking for the inaugural Vaqueros football game at Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium on Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. — the Gray Lot on Texas Road will hold 1,000 vehicles and a second Orange Lot planned near Doolittle Road will hold 2,000 vehicles. Free shuttles will run from UTRGV campus lots starting at 1:45 p.m. and from Brownsville Campus Lot B4 starting at 12:30 p.m. — the last departure is set for one hour after the game ends.  KRGV
  • The University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley warned fans about fake tickets for the August 30th football game against Sul Ross State, saying some secondary market sellers charge high prices for seats not available at Vackar Stadium—fans are urged to buy only at UTRGVtickets.com.  KURV
