COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Edinburg will host its 5th Annual Patriot Day of Remembrance 9/11 Memorial Run on Sept.6 with the run starting at 7:45 a.m. and a free Honorary Walk beginning at 9:11 a.m. at Fire Station 1—registration costs $15 and packet pickup is on Sept.4 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sept.5 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on race day from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m.  The Edinburg Advocate

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire destroyed the Chapa family home in the 4700 block of Caderita Street east of Edinburg, and the Hidalgo County Fire Marshal has begun an investigation while neighbors start donation drives to help the family.  FOX RGV

CRIME NEWS

  • CBP officers seized $7.6 million worth of meth hidden among roses in 154 packages weighing 857 pounds at the Pharr International Bridge Tuesday — the finding led Homeland Security to launch an investigation to stop drug trafficking.  FOX RGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Dustin M. Sekula Memorial Library in Edinburg will host free U.S. citizenship preparation classes starting Aug. 28 that teach civics, U.S. history and exam strategies. Spanish-language sessions run every Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. until Nov. 13 and bilingual courses occur every Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. until Nov. 15 at 1906 S. Closner Blvd; participants can register by calling 956-383-6246.  The Edinburg Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TxDOT crews in San Benito and Brownsville are clearing debris from inlets and setting up barricades and sandbags—measures that will help prevent flooding and hazardous road conditions as heavy rainfall is forecast. Officials are also working with local contractors to secure construction sites and lessen additional hazards.  FOX RGV
  • Texas Department of Transportation warned drivers in Edinburg to be careful as heavy rain may cause flash floods—drivers should reduce speed, avoid flooded roads and check road conditions before traveling. The agency also warned that ignoring barricades—can lead to fines or jail time.  The Edinburg Advocate
