An Edinburg man, Jacob Rivas, 34, was arrested Saturday in a Pharr parking lot after ATF agents observed him driving a box truck and discovered more than 100-thousand rounds of ammunition in it—he now faces charges as a felon in possession of a firearm or ammunition.
San Benito native Ernesto Marroquin celebrated his 100th birthday on July 8 in Harlingen as his family marked this milestone.

The schedule includes Toddler Time on Aug. 19 and 26 at 10 a.m., Homeschool Hour on Aug. 20 and 27 at 11 a.m., Family Storytime on Aug. 21 at 6 p.m., Pre-School Story Time for children ages 6-11 on Aug. 22 and 29 at 10 a.m. + basic computer classes on Aug. 28 at 6 p.m. at the library.
The Dustin M. Sekula Memorial Library hosted a Lighthouse Painting workshop on Aug.
7th at 6 p.m., a Beginners Embroidery class on Aug. 12th at 2 p.m., and Basic Computer Classes on Aug. 11th at 10 a.m. with bilingual instruction, and it will offer a Beginners Embroidery session on Aug. 19th at 2 p.m., Basic Computer Classes on Aug. 18th and 25th at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., a health presentation on Aug. 23rd at 11 a.m., and a DIY Mochi class on Aug. 29th at 10 a.m.—all programs are free and come with supplied materials. The library is located at 1906 S. Closner Blvd.
Edinburg Police investigator John Olivarez, aged 49, died Tuesday after a battle with lymphoma while his family traveled to Houston for treatment—police chief Jaime Ayala said his courage and commitment will be remembered.
Edinburg police officer Felicia Barragan, a graduate of South Texas College and U.S. Army veteran, started the Blue Heart Initiative—an outreach program linking law enforcement with local elementary students.
She works full time on patrol, teaches self-defense classes, and studies to make her work in our town even better.
Edinburg Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for Fall 2025 Adult Sports Leagues in basketball, volleyball and softball, with sign-up open from August 11 through September 3 and league play beginning the week of September 15.
Team fees range from $200 to $350 (with basketball at $300, volleyball at $200 and softball at $350) and spots are limited.
