CRIME NEWS

  • An Edinburg man—Francisco Coronado Junior—pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges after he allegedly assaulted his 86-year-old father in April who died about a week later and remains in custody on a one-million-dollar bond.  KURV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Edinburg Cultural Arts Department will host a chamber music concert on Friday, Aug. 8 at the ACE Center Ballroom—featuring performances by a string quartet, winds quartet and piano trio. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and tickets cost $5 per person with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis for all ages.  The Edinburg Advocate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Edinburg CISD has opened online registration for the 2025–2026 school year so that parents and students can sign up through Skyward. School staff are available on campus from Aug. 4 to Aug. 8 (with shifts from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. by grade) to assist with registration, and classes begin on Aug. 18.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • Region One ESC’s Parent and Family Engagement department launched a free virtual series called Back to School, Back to Safety that held its first session on Aug.5 and will host weekly bilingual workshops on cyber safety, online bullying, gaming safety and fentanyl awareness every Tuesday in August. The program is offered in partnership with Crime Stoppers of Houston—registration is free and participants will receive a Zoom link to join.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • Brewster School Honor Band (part of Edinburg CISD) was named the 2026 TMEA 1C Honor Band after besting 11 other schools statewide under the direction of Gerardo Reyes (their music teacher). The band will perform at the TMEA Convention in San Antonio in February.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • On August 6, 2025, the Edinburg School Board approved a new Chief Academic Officer—Dr. Sonya Rodriguez—for the upcoming school year after initially rejecting the position in June; the board also approved several other new hires to prepare for the new school year.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • Edinburg CISD will host its annual Back to School Bash on Aug. 14 at Bert Ogden Arena & offer free school supplies while supplies last, free haircuts, and vaccines at $10 per dose (with no cost for CHIP or Medicaid students). The event runs from 4 to 7 p.m. with doors opening at 3 for ECISD families, and each student must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  The Edinburg Advocate

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Rio Grande Valley saw record-breaking heat on August 6 when temperatures hit 101°F, close to a 2023 record of 105°F. Forecasts say the heat index will rise to 106°F tomorrow and reach 111°F by the weekend—residents should drink plenty of water.  FOX RGV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Registration is open for Edinburg’s Fall 5-on-5 Adult Flag Football League as the Co-Ed division starts Monday nights on August 25 and the Men’s division kicks off Wednesday nights on August 27 at Edinburg Municipal Park soccer fields — teams must pay $200 and sign up by August 20 for a three-week season plus a playoff round.  The Edinburg Advocate
