- ➤ Edinburg Police Department will host its 29th annual National Night Out at Promenade Park Amphitheater tomorrow at 6 p.m. Local residents will enjoy live music, free backpacks while supplies last, and a carnival as they meet police and fire department officers. FOX RGV
- ➤ Edinburg Fire Department will host Sparky’s Back 2 School Bash on Aug. 14, from 6 to 10 p.m. at Promenade Park Amphitheater—featuring free games, moon jumps, giveaways and a movie screening to celebrate the new school year. Free haircuts for students in grades K-12 will be provided from 3 to 9 p.m. at the ACE Building and the event is sponsored by Walmart and Papa John’s Pizza. The Edinburg Advocate
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Carlos Gerardo Perez Munoz, a Mexican man accused of tampering with witnesses during a federal investigation, was arrested last month at the Hidalgo bridge—he reportedly threatened a witness and is held without bond after a judge found probable cause, and he may face up to 20 years in prison if convicted. - ➤ An Indiana man, Cesar Rafael Leon, was arrested in Weslaco on Monday when a vehicle he was in struck a DPS patrol unit during a chase by Border Patrol agents after it refused to pull over in Progreso—five people in the vehicle were arrested for being in the U.S. illegally and Leon now faces charges of human smuggling, aggravated assault of a public servant and evading arrest. - ➤ Border Patrol and DPS worked together in a high-speed chase that started in Mercedes and ended in Weslaco at Mr. Gatti’s parking lot — where 34-year-old Cesar Rafael Leon from Indiana was arrested on human smuggling charges and five undocumented individuals were found, with one pregnant woman taken to Knapp Medical Center. - ➤ Edinburg City Council met on Monday, August 4 at 6 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers to change its schedule so residents could take part in National Night Out on Tuesday. The meeting's agenda honored local leaders including Councilmember David White and Coach Al Ogletree—while also addressing zoning, variance, and resolution proposals—with public comments limited to three minutes per speaker. - ➤ The Edinburg City Council will rename part of Sugar Road as Coach Al Ogletree Way to honor the former UTRGV baseball coach—who led the team from 1969 to 1997 and guided them to 12 NCAA Tournament appearances. The council made the decision following Ogletree’s legacy after his passing in 2019. KURV

- ➤ DHR Health in Edinburg welcomed Dr. Prateek Suresh Harne, a doctor who trained in advanced therapeutic endoscopy at Allegheny Health Network and also trained in gastroenterology and liver care at UT Health Science Center and UTRGV. He is now accepting new patients at the DHR Health Gastroenterology Institute on Leonardo Da Vinci Drive and will use the latest methods to treat local patients. Rio Grande Guardian
- ➤ South Texas Health System Edinburg was named the second most beautiful hospital in the nation in Soliant Health’s contest—receiving nearly 1.01 million votes from patients, staff, and supporters. - ➤ The City of Edinburg is accepting registrations for youth fall sports leagues until Aug. 29—registration opened on Aug. 4 and includes flag football for K-5, girls volleyball for K-6, and tackle football for 6th graders. Proof of school enrollment is required and fees are $45 for flag football and volleyball and $60 for tackle football with league play tentatively starting on Sept. 29, Sept. 22, and Oct. 11.
