- ➤ La Plaza Mall is hosting its annual Back-To-School Bash on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.—the event will give 400 students free backpacks with school supplies, offer giveaways every 30 minutes for prizes like tablets and gift cards, and include a fashion show, all set ahead of the tax-free weekend from August 8 through August 10. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UTRGV will rename its online Business Analytics master’s program to Master of Science in Business Analytics and Artificial Intelligence this fall—adding new AI courses to better prepare students for future jobs. Current students can keep the old name or join the redesigned program, while new applicants will receive diplomas with the new title. The Edinburg Advocate

- ➤ Edinburg firefighters returned from a 16-day search effort in Central Texas and two were deployed on Friday to Kerrville to aid in flood recovery by using a boat to search the Guadalupe River—this deployment is part of their work with the Texas A&M Task Force 1 Response Team. Their efforts aim to support rescue operations in the affected area. KRGV
- ➤ Manuel Cruz, executive director of the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council, said at a Small Cities Coalition meeting that the COG received good news about funding for its Department of Aging — the funding may boost services for small cities. Rio Grande Guardian
