- ➤ Edinburg Police Department will host the 29th Annual National Night Out at Promenade Park Amphitheater on August 5 at 6 p.m. The family-friendly event will include live music by The Fabulous Cruisers, a visit by Bobby Pulido, a car show, carnival rides, children’s games, and free backpacks for school kids. - ➤ On Monday, a garbage truck caught fire at Barrientes Middle School in Edinburg when officers arrived shortly after 5:30 p.m.—the driver was taken to the hospital and crews controlled the blaze to prevent its spread. KURV

- ➤ CBP officers seized 76 pounds of cocaine worth about $1 million hidden in a 2020 Renault Orage at the McAllen Hidalgo International Bridge on Saturday — Homeland Security Investigations has launched a probe to uncover the smuggling network. FOX RGV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Edinburg Police Department received full accreditation from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement on May 20 to run its own police academy, giving it full control of training and curriculum for new recruits—its new class began in mid-July and cadets train at the department’s facility. KRGV
- ➤ Edinburg city officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday morning to celebrate the new water tower near Monte Cristo Road and Closner Boulevard that holds 1 million gallons—the only one in the city with that capacity and designed to improve water pressure and support the fire department. - ➤ South Texas ISD will launch its own police department next school year to patrol six campuses from Edinburg to Olmito and reduce reliance on local law enforcement. The district spent over $1 million from its general fund to hire eight officers & a captain who will be sworn in before classes begin on Aug. 18 while continuing to use armed security guards. KRGV
