COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Channel 5 News and McAllen International Airport are giving away round trip tickets to Cancun. Viewers can register during Channel 5 News This Morning until July 31 to win four tickets * or enter on Instagram for two nonstop flights, with winners announced on Aug. 1 and Aug. 4.  KRGV
  • The fourth installment of the DRH Cattle Co. Youth Rodeo series will take place on August 2 at the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Posse Arena at 603 W. Wisconsin Road in Edinburg. Speed events will start at 1 p.m. and bull and steer riding at 6:45 p.m. — spectators can enjoy food, drinks and western-themed shopping while admission is $10 and young competitors from South Texas are set to participate.  The Edinburg Advocate

CRIME NEWS

  • A 45-year-old man from La Blanca was indicted for allegedly shooting and killing his ex-girlfriend (Ana Maria Davila) outside a bar in Alamo on April 5, and he is set to be arraigned on Monday.  MyRGV.com
  • Daniel Sustaita, a 45-year-old man from Alton, was sentenced to life in prison on Monday for two counts of intoxication manslaughter after crashing into a Jeep carrying two 21-year-olds in March 2022—he was also charged with cocaine possession due to his criminal history.  MyRGV.com
  • A Hidalgo County man, Arturo Leon Junior, was arrested on Friday on charges of indecency with a child after an assault was reported by a victim under 16; he had a previous arrest for possessing child pornography and his bond is set at $250,000.  KURV
  • Police are investigating a shooting and crash after officers responded near Westgate Drive and Frontage Road early Sunday after 5:30 a.m.—a man in one vehicle suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital where doctors expect him to survive.  KURV
  • Federal agents arrested a woman at Hidalgo Port of Entry on Friday after they found nearly 428 pounds of meth hidden in vacuum-sealed packages in her vehicle—she admitted she knew she was smuggling drugs from Mexico and now faces charges of illegal importation and conspiracy.  MyRGV.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Edinburg CISD Police are hosting a statewide school safety summit at Edinburg High School from July 28 through August 1, drawing more than 300 officers from across Texas to train and share best practices. Media can attend select sessions—featuring keynote presentations and expert-led workshops on emergency response, youth mental health, and community engagement.  The Edinburg Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Edinburg finished building a new one-million-gallon water tower near Monte Cristo Road and Closner Boulevard to boost water service and pressure in the north—city officials will host a ribbon-cutting today at 10 a.m. at 3925 N. Business Highway 281, part of a project that added 1,800 feet of new water line since November 2023.  The Edinburg Advocate
