- ➤ A 14-year-old incoming freshman at Vanguard Academy was detained for making a threat—police said she had previously been held on June 23 for allegedly bringing a knife to Barrientes Middle School and the investigation remains ongoing. The Edinburg Advocate
- ➤ Progreso's former mayor, Jerry Alanis, pleaded guilty to federal drug trafficking charges and admitted to a conspiracy that shipped cocaine from Progreso to Houston, and he was sentenced to 46 months in prison — he must report to prison by August 22. KURV
- ➤ Softball coach Joel Gonzalez was arrested in McAllen on assault charges after reportedly pushing a female umpire during a Saturday game in the Protect Our Nation’s Youth International Softball League + video shows the umpire falling after an on-field confrontation and the league has banned him from coaching. - ➤ The Dustin M. Sekula Memorial Library in Edinburg has hosted free, hands-on adult programs since July 23 and will continue with sessions like DIY Birds on The Pier and Colorful Meadow through July 31 at 2 p.m. — all materials are provided with no registration required at 1906 S. - ➤ Valley Metro is planning a microtransit service that will offer door-to-door rides in rural areas of the RGV on weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.—the agency will visit small cities and ask for about $7,000 each as local funding to meet the federal match requirement. Rio Grande Guardian
- ➤ Jesuit Priest Brian Strassburger of San Felipe de Jesus Catholic Church in Brownsville said he saw a broken immigration court process when he witnessed an asylum seeker named Carlos quickly removed in a Harlingen hearing. He works with Del Camino Jesuit Border Ministries that helps migrants in shelters along the border receive basic humanitarian aid and support for their faith. Rio Grande Guardian

- ➤ DHR Health Women’s Hospital celebrated reaching 150,000 births yesterday when a mother delivered its milestone baby — a ceremony that honored patients, staff and physicians.
