- ➤ Gerardo Alanis, Progreso's former mayor, was sentenced to nearly four years in prison—he pleaded guilty to a drug trafficking conspiracy involving over 11 pounds of cocaine while his brother received a 12.5-year term. MyRGV.com
- ➤ Arturo Omar Lopez Jr., 17, was charged Thursday for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he shot a teen girl in the abdomen inside a vehicle on the 6200 block of Adventure Avenue at about 4:40 p.m. on Wednesday—she received treatment for a non-life-threatening injury and investigators expect further arrests. - ➤ School districts in the Rio Grande Valley are finalizing budgets for the upcoming school year as lawmakers approved an extra $8.5 billion for school funding and teachers are set to receive raises ranging from $2,500 to $8,000. - ➤ Tejano singer Bobby Pulido from Edinburg has formed an exploratory committee to evaluate a run for Congress against Rep. Monica De La Cruz. - ➤ Former city council member Juan Tomas Garcia has filed paperwork to run for Edinburg mayor—he served as councilman and mayor pro-tem between 2019 and 2023.
