COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce hosts the 19th annual Texas Cook’Em at Ebony Hills Golf Course where the public can enjoy free admission, barbecue contests, family activities, live music beginning at 4 p.m., and a fireworks show. Competitors will vie for $12,500 in cash prizes while children join a Kids Cook’Em contest—additional attractions include a car and truck show and a skydiving demonstration scheduled later in the day.  The Edinburg Advocate

CRIME NEWS

  • A 33-year-old man, Justin Lee Garza, who climbed a home roof on the 900 block of Los Ebanos Court on June 9, was arraigned on Thursday in Edinburg on charges of criminal mischief and trespass and had a bond set at $15,000 after police reported he swung a walking stick like a sword while fleeing.  KRGV
  • On June 25, 2024, San Juan police arrested Sadiel Noa-Aguila for his role in a nationwide auto theft ring that smuggled vehicles into Mexico for money—he was later released on bond in McAllen federal court with his arraignment scheduled for a future date.  MyRGV.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Three FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers in the Valley will close permanently when the McAllen center ends at 7 p.m. on July 9 and both the Rio Grande City courthouse and Sebastian center end at 5 p.m. on July 12. Four centers in San Benito, Harlingen, Pharr + Weslaco will continue offering March flood assistance until the federal aid deadline on July 22 and resume normal hours on July 7 after the holiday.  KRGV
  • Edinburg Police received TCOLE accreditation to run their own academy, which will train recruits at the LCPL Derek Hernandez Police Training Facility. The first class will start in mid-July, and Police Chief Jaime Ayala—who worked with the LRGVDC since 2017—said the new academy will give the department greater oversight of training.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • South Texas will add about 17 miles of floating border wall as Homeland Security deploys buoys+ the waterborne barriers are meant to help agents secure the Rio Grande and deter illegal crossings+.  KURV
