CRIME NEWS

  • McAllen Police Chief Victor Perez said there is no link between migrants crossing the Rio Grande and rising crime when he presented the 2024 Annual Crime Report at the Chamber of Commerce—he noted that this past year showed the lowest crime levels in 38 years as part of the 17th consecutive drop in two decades. The report came as the Defense Department announced an expansion of a national defense area along the southern border.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Early Sunday, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office said 49-year-old Armando Giovannotto died from multiple stab wounds at a residence on the 6000 block of N. Bentsen Palm Drive in rural Mission—his domestic partner Kevin Lee Gutierrez, 34, was detained at a La Joya home and taken to a local hospital for treatment.  MyRGV.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Edinburg's Dustin M. Sekula Memorial Library will continue its 'Color Our World' Summer Reading Program in July with themed sessions for children and teens. The library will host toddler, STEM, and art activities for kids on July 1–3 and teen drama and visual arts events starting on July 1 at 6 p.m.—all free at its location on 1906 S.   • The Dustin M. Sekula Memorial Library in Edinburg will host free family STEM workshops in July as aspiring scientist Grace D. Guerrera leads hands-on chemistry experiments—July 12 at 1 p.m. will feature a layered liquids activity while July 26 at 1 p.m. will demonstrate capillary action with water and balloons. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Edinburg City Council will review a schematic design for a new downtown parking garage at 201 N. Closner Boulevard during a meeting on July 1 to meet growing parking needs and improve access to local attractions—such as the ACE District and Promenade Park Amphitheater. City staff will present the design features, including exterior pavers and sidewalk improvements, and seek approval to move forward with design development so construction can begin in late September.  The Edinburg Advocate

SPORTS NEWS

  • The 11-12 year old Edinburg Red softball team became the first local squad to advance to the State Tournament after winning the Section 4 Championship by beating teams from Laredo, Alice and Corpus Christi. They will compete in Abilene from July 8 to 12—an achievement that marks a historic milestone for local youth sports.  The Edinburg Advocate
