COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Edinburg Police will host Operation Chill at the 7-Eleven located at 1210 E. Monte Cristo Road on July 11; the event starts at 6 p.m. and will include games, prizes, free giveaways, complimentary Slurpees and Slurpee coupons for well-behaved children. Families are invited to join local officers for a fun evening that builds positive community ties.  The Edinburg Advocate

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Freightliner truck lost control and collided with a Hidalgo County Sheriff’s patrol unit on Highway 281 near El Rucio Road around 4:30 p.m., causing the truck driver to die while a deputy received minor injuries—authorities are investigating the incident to address rising safety concerns.  FOX RGV

CRIME NEWS

  • Roberto Vasquez Bolanos, a 37-year-old Peñitas man, pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter and received a 10-year prison sentence for causing a three-vehicle crash on May 29th on State Highway 107—Ware Road that killed 26-year-old David De La Torre Martinez after admitting he had had 2 beers and 1 shot.  MyRGV.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District is holding a special board meeting today at 12 p.m. in the Board Meeting Room at 411 N. 8th Street to review contracts for roofing repairs at Canterbury and Cavazos Elementary, chiller replacement at Harwell Middle School, and multi-use buildings at high schools—following delays from the Facilities Committee's review process.  The Edinburg Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Portions of Hidalgo and Cameron counties have been designated as a National Defense Area — now managed by Joint Base San Antonio after land was transferred from the IBWC to the GSA. Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said local leaders have not yet received guidance from the Department of Defense and urged federal officials to meet with them soon for more details.  The Edinburg Advocate

  • South Texas Health System Edinburg was named a finalist in Soliant Health’s Most Beautiful Hospitals contest—its modern five-story patient tower features hotel-like interiors and serene patient rooms; community members can vote through July 25.  The Edinburg Advocate
