- ➤ On June 26, 2025, a sheriff’s deputy was involved in a fatal crash when a traffic safety truck sideswiped his patrol unit near El Rucio Road on U.S. 281 just outside Edinburg at about 4:22 p.m.—the deputy was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries while the truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene. - ➤ COSTEP’s economic development director Rick Carrera presented his data-rich slide at the recent Delta Area Summit at Edcouch-Elsa ISD—showing that the seven counties north and the ten municipios south of the Rio Grande have populations of 1.7 million and over 1.9 million respectively, which impressed site selectors and potential investors. - ➤ On Thursday afternoon, Edinburg hosted a send-off ceremony at 2 p.m. at the Parks and Recreation facility at 315 Mark S. Peña Drive to honor three local teams that won their Valley District Championships and advanced to sectional tournaments—one softball team traveled to Alice, one baseball team hosted sectionals in Edinburg, and one juniors team competed in Laredo.
