CRIME NEWS

  • A 23-year-old Mexican river guide pleaded guilty to his role in a smuggling scheme that led to a migrant's death and received a 30-month sentence+ he is set to be deported after serving his term.  KRGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • STEM Nation 2025 was held on May 20 at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg and inspired over 5,000 high school students to learn about science, technology, engineering and math + explore future careers. The event featured speakers such as retired astronaut Col. Michael E. Fossum and led the RGV Philanthropic Foundation to plan a similar conference in 2026.  Rio Grande Guardian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar held a roundtable at Starr County Memorial Hospital on June 19 to discuss proposed Medicaid and ACA cuts that may force rural hospitals to cut services or close—potentially leaving over 50,000 local neighbors without coverage and risking 142,000 health care jobs. He warned that losing up to $55 billion in federal funds over the next decade would hurt both patient care and local economies.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • On June 17th, 2025, leaders from Elsa, Edcouch and La Villa gathered at the EEISD Technology Center to plan joint actions on public safety and infrastructure improvements—focusing on fixing address mismatches and sharing a vactor truck.   • Texas passed a law that will require every public school classroom to display a 16-by-20-inch poster of a specific English version of the Ten Commandments, and Gov. Greg Abbott signed the bill on Saturday. State Attorney General Liz Murrell said she will appeal potential legal challenges as critics claim the measure violates the separation of church and state—supporters argue it honors the nation’s heritage.  KURV
