- ➤ Edinburg CISD has avoided a $6 million deficit for the 2025-2026 school year thanks to extra funding from the Texas Legislature under House Bill 2—district officials now project a balanced budget of about $470 million with plans for teacher and staff pay raises. - ➤ Edinburg Police Chief Jaime Ayala was appointed as Regional Director for Region 12 of the Texas Police Chiefs Association, covering much of South Texas. He will lead regional police communication and officer development—drawing on over 35 years of law enforcement service. The Edinburg Advocate
- ➤ Edinburg City Council denied a rezoning request to allow apartments at South 8th and West Canal Streets and a proposal to create smaller subdivision lots at 5161 N I-69C after residents raised concerns over environmental, safety, and community impacts—council members commended the public for speaking up at the meeting. - ➤ USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins announced on Wednesday in Edinburg that a new facility will open at Moore Air Base in Hidalgo County to produce and release sterile screwworm flies to stop pest breeding after a recent outbreak in Mexico halted animal imports. The center will work to keep the harmful insect from spreading north—protecting local farms. KURV

- ➤ Edinburg doctor Dr. Henry Herrera said he is still coming to terms with his wife Rocio’s passing from a brain aneurysm in 2024—he honored her wish by donating her organs. Representatives with the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance updated him on the lives saved by her gift, and he now encourages others to become organ donors. KRGV
- ➤ MHP Salud said that no staff lost their jobs because federal funding cuts to its Navigator program did not force layoffs — the Weslaco nonprofit will continue supporting community health programs as final staffing decisions are pending.
