  • Progreso ISD board president Juan J. Ramos Jr. was arrested in Weslaco on charges of public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance — the district said the matter is an individual one that will not disrupt school operations.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local officials in Alamo and Palm are urging residents to prepare for hurricane season by collecting sandbags from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and following weather updates—fire crews remain ready with a water rescue craft in case of floods.  FOX RGV
  • Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller and state officials are holding a press conference in Edinburg today to announce new efforts to control and eradicate the New World Screwworm—measures meant to protect local livestock.  KRGV
  • Edinburg City Council approved $6,997,000 in bonds for landfill improvements that will be repaid over 10 to 20 years from fee revenues and will not raise taxes—local financial advisors said the bonds offer a rate of about 4.47% and will be callable in 10 years.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • State officials announced plans today in Edinburg to build an $8.5 million sterile fly facility at Moore Air Base aimed at stopping the screwworm outbreak from Mexico from reaching South Texas + USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins and Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz detailed the measure during a news conference.  KRGV

  • Hilda Ramirez donated her kidney to her husband Hugo in 2023 — giving him a second chance at life after his kidneys failed from COVID complications and years of dialysis. The couple now urges others to become donors as Channel 5 News and the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance host a registration drive Friday at the Weslaco studio from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  KRGV
