CRIME NEWS

  • Federal immigration officers arrested 25 people at worksites in Brownsville and South Padre Island on June 5, with Texas Department of Public Safety and U.S. Marshals assisting — ICE said the detainees from Honduras and Mexico are pending removal to their home countries.  KURV
  • Last Friday a masked suspect robbed a local smoke shop in Edinburg by fleeing in a new Chevy sedan + authorities urge anyone with information to call the sheriff's office at 956-668-8477.  FOX RGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A federal judge temporarily blocked the Texas Dream Act, leaving more than 20,000 undocumented students uncertain about paying for college — the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley said it will work to help affected students as rising costs may force many to pay much more than before.  FOX RGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Daniel Vera, Edinburg’s IT Director, was named one of the Top 10 City Government IT Directors by Government CIO Outlook on June 6—this honor recognized his 20-year career and innovative work in digital services while he led a 19-member IT team in modernizing city operations.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez announced Thursday that he will run for re-election to serve a third term in office. He said his county faced unprecedented challenges since 2018 and made progress with a new courthouse, drainage improvements and new roads—while he works to diversify its economy and build a strong workforce.  KURV
  • Bradley Schwarz, director of transmission planning for Hunt Utility Services, spoke at a COSTEP luncheon in McAllen on June 3 to explain future electric transmission projects in the region. He detailed plans for a 'close the loop' circuit, a new Kingfisher station — and a project to build a seven mile transmission line starting in 2029 that will boost capacity in the Rio Grande Valley.  Rio Grande Guardian
