ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 48-year-old man died in a single-vehicle accident in Alamo on FM 495 and Alamo Road when his vehicle struck a pole and he was taken to a local hospital, where he later died—authorities are investigating the incident.  KRGV
  • A two-vehicle crash near Alton on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. sent 13 people to a local hospital with minor injuries when a Chevrolet Silverado carrying 11 occupants (including minors headed to a celebration) lost control and struck a Range Rover driven by a woman, and the male driver was later cited (for no driver license, speeding, and not using a child safety seat) and now faces $1,000 in fines and court fees.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Census Bureau's latest estimates show that eight Rio Grande Valley cities, including Edinburg, grew by over eight percent from 2020 to 2024 — Edinburg’s population increased from 100,316 to 108,733 and it ranks 25th nationally and 10th in Texas among cities with more than 100,000 residents.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • State Sen. Juan Hinojosa said he proudly voted for Senate Bill 1, a state budget for the 2026-27 biennium that funds billions for education, tax relief, public safety, infrastructure and more. The bill, which includes a $10 million upgrade for South Texas International Airport in Edinburg, will take effect on September 1 after Governor Greg Abbott signs it—accompanied by House Bill 500 in a supplemental spending package.  Rio Grande Guardian
