ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A sinkhole measuring about 13 to 15 feet wide and 12 inches deep opened on Haranchina Road at Mile 14 in Hidalgo County when an abandoned gas line possibly caused the collapse—county crews closed the road at 10:30 a.m. and filled the hole with caliche, though residents remain worried about long-term safety.  FOX RGV

CRIME NEWS

  • Cameron County Sheriff Manuel Trevino said former jailer Lt. Alexander Lazo was arrested and arraigned after he allegedly hit three inmates with a metal pepper spray canister on May 22 during efforts to remove inmates after a cell fire at the Old County Jail — he faced three counts of aggravated assault and a $90,000 bond.  KRGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas Southmost College’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography program achieved a 100% graduation and job placement rate for seven Spring graduates—who completed 18 months of clinical training across the Rio Grande Valley. The program offers free sonograms to pregnant women and is accepting applications for a new cohort that begins in Fall with the deadline due today.  Rio Grande Guardian

FINANCE NEWS

  • In the Rio Grande Valley, heavy rains in March caused flooding that damaged more than 4,000 homes, echoing events from June 2018 and June 2019—a pattern that highlights the need for flood insurance. Insurance expert Ramon Montalvo advises homeowners to get a quote soon since standard policies do not cover flood damage and new policies require 30 days to take effect.  KRGV

  • Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez released a cookbook yesterday with quick recipes for cooking during a power outage and included alternative fuel and safety tips to help families prepare for emergencies.
