  • Channel 5 News interviewed a Weslaco family today, who recalled riding out Hurricane Beulah in 1967. Their story — highlighting close calls and quick decisions — reminds neighbors in Edinburg to remain prepared for severe weather.  KRGV
  • Channel 5 News Chief Photographer Mark Vecchio asked Rio Grande Valley residents if their hurricane kits were ready as storms may knock out power, cell towers, and water supplies + experts stress that having essential items prepared can reduce vulnerability.  KRGV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Weslaco-based COSTEP will send its report on manufacturing vs warehousing & storage vs retail trade to LRGVDC members after Rick Carrera promised it at a May 27 board meeting; the report shows how recruiting manufacturing drives higher economic returns and hints at a follow-up study on uniting local MSAs.  Rio Grande Guardian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Edinburg School Board approved major curriculum and technology contracts and tabled an insurance proposal on May 28 (pending further review) after public comments raised concerns on school safety, employee reporting, and classroom policies. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hurricane Harvey survivor Gail Schuller recalled how the storm rapidly intensified in 2017 as conditions worsened at a friend's home near the Rio Grande Valley. Her experience shows locals must prepare in advance for storms that can escalate fast — a lesson for the community today.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After the election, Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño thanked family, supporters and voters for standing with him during his campaign. He said his journey united the community and highlighted his commitment to serve with pride.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Yennifer England, a 32-year-old DACA recipient and nurse's assistant from Donna, was released from detention on May 21 from the El Valle Detention Center in Raymondville after being held since mid-February; she now waits for removal proceedings (wearing an ankle monitor).  KRGV

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local report warns that dangers after storms, such as carbon monoxide poisoning from improperly used generators and live power lines, can be deadly. Residents should keep generators at least 20 feet away and avoid downed lines by staying 30 feet away to protect themselves.  KRGV
  • Researchers at UTRGV have identified a new biomarker, p75ecd, which can be detected in a urine sample to signal early motor neuron damage in ALS patients. The study, funded by the SSA Foundation, may help doctors start treatment sooner & track the illness more accurately.  MyRGV.com
