  • Pirate’s Cove Splash Park will reopen Monday, June 2, with scheduled swim sessions—9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on weekdays and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. on weekends. The inclusive water playground is located at 125 Mark S. Peña Dr.—admission is cash only and guests must wear proper swimwear.  The Edinburg Advocate

CRIME NEWS

  • Fugitive on Texas’ Most Wanted list, Eliud Perez Reyes (45), was arrested Monday in Palmview during a traffic stop after he gave a false name, and he is now held at Hidalgo County jail for charges including aggravated assault, sexual assault, and theft.  KRGV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • According to 2024 Census estimates, Edinburg’s population grew 2.62 percent from 105,956 to 108,733, ranking it as the 25th fastest growing city in the nation and the fastest in the Rio Grande Valley. City leaders reported that Zoho Corporation acquired the historic Echo Hotel property—planning to redevelop it into a modern office campus—boosting local business opportunities.  The Edinburg Advocate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Hidalgo ISD board selected J.A. Gonzalez as the sole finalist for the superintendent position today — Gonzalez previously served in Harlingen and McAllen and the board will finalize a contract in 21 days.  KURV
  • The Edinburg CISD Board approved hiring an Austin-based consultant firm and a local investigator to review staff actions after a gun incident at Edinburg North High School earlier this month — after a closed-door session that led to Superintendent Mario Salinas being placed on a five-day leave. The board also agreed to pursue land next to the high school and hired Maribel Guadalupe de la Rosa as Dean of Instruction for Economedes High School.  The Edinburg Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Edinburg Police Department is holding an entry-level officer exam on Friday, June 13 with testing beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Edinburg Activity Center at 123 E. Palm Dr—applications are due by May 30 and selected candidates will earn a starting salary from $41,423.41 to $67,969.02 along with benefits.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • A bill headed to Governor Greg Abbott would let Texas observe daylight saving time all year—creating Texas Time—if the federal government approves the change; it was introduced by Representative Will Metcalf and sponsored by Senator Paul Bettencourt.  KURV
