COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Edinburg Police Department will host a three-day women’s self-defense course from June 1 to 3 at the Cpl. Derek Hernandez Police Training Facility (1313 N. Doolittle Road); sessions run from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and are open to women 18 and older.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • Edinburg will soon build a new $125,000 outdoor fitness court at De Zavala Park funded by a federal grant; the court offers strength and cardio stations and gives the nearby elementary school exclusive weekday access while opening to the public at 4 p.m. weekdays, weekends, and summer.   • The RGV Hispanic Chamber of Commerce invites business owners, professionals, and entrepreneurs to its Manic Monday Mixer — a recurring networking event held at Pedro's Tacos and Tequila Bar in Edinburg.  Rio Grande Guardian

  • An Edinburg resident claimed a $1 million prize from a Texas Lottery Premier Play scratch ticket bought at TXB 82 on Carter St. in Asherton; the retailer (eligible for a $10,000 bonus) may earn extra funds.  KRGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Monday, May 26, Edinburg CISD awarded $1,000 scholarships, laptops, and backpacks to 70 graduating seniors at a board meeting; the awards—sponsored by AT&T and the Rio Grande Valley Partnership Foundation—aimed to boost academic success and close the digital divide.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • Today, Rina Castillo and Alejo Salinas Jr., Ph.D. were sworn in as STC Board of Trustees members for six-year terms in Edinburg. Salinas continues his long service while Castillo brings 20 years experience in education and workforce development + community advocacy.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • Los Fresnos student Anirudh Roy, 12, from Resaca Middle School advanced to the Scripps National Spelling Bee semi-finals in Washington D.C. after winning the Rio Grande Valley Regional Spelling Bee at the Edinburg Conference Center on Saturday (he was eliminated in the seventh round on Wednesday).  MyRGV.com
  • Edinburg CISD trustees approved over $10M in Teacher Incentive Allotment funds on Tuesday, May 26, rewarding educators who met state performance standards. Trustees Carmen Gonzalez and Letty Garcia supported the unanimous motion to boost retention at high-needs and rural campuses.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • A government contracting training course is available to guide local business owners in working with federal, state, and local agencies. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Edinburg's Department of Solid Waste is tracking mosquito activity by surveying neighborhoods for standing water and counting insects while adding larvicide, and it urges residents to drain water at home (using the three D's) to lower breeding risks.  KRGV

  • Veteran small business owners in the Rio Grande Valley attended a workshop on Wednesday hosted by UTRGV APEX Accelerator and the Lower Rio Grande SBA to learn about federal contract registration (the Department of Veteran Affairs sets aside 7% of contracts for certified veterans) and to receive application help.  KRGV

  • DHR Health Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation advises on preventing traumatic brain injuries from falls, car accidents, and sports.
