  • Bobby Calvillo—longtime CEO of Affordable Homes of South Texas—died on May 19 at age 62; community leaders praised his work helping families secure affordable homes and said his legacy will guide future efforts in the region.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • The City of Edinburg will open its splash pads for the summer season on May 31 — families will enjoy free access at five park locations with hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.  The Edinburg Advocate

CRIME NEWS

  • Edinburg North High School had its third gun incident in two weeks when 17-year-old Jordan Jerome posted photos with a gun on Instagram, leading to his arrest while he continues school under strict court rules—local officials and parents are urging stronger safety steps.  FOX RGV
  • On Friday, extra police presence was set up at Memorial Middle School after a parent alerted authorities of a reposted social media threat—police clarified that outdated information had been shared and no current threat existed.  KRGV
  • Twenty-three-year-old Abraham Guadalupe Gonzalez from Edinburg, one of four charged in the 2023 death of Augusto De La Torre Quiroz in Pharr, was taken into custody in Hidalgo County on Wednesday after skipping his court hearing last month & now faces capital murder and other charges while held without bond.  KURV
  • A South Texas jury awarded $80M to the family of 8-year-old Caleb Ramirez, who was fatally hit last year while riding his bike after 17-year-old Alex Castillo drove without a license on East Eller Street in Pharr— the verdict noted the teen's family was partially responsible while Caleb's family had originally asked for $1M in damages.  KURV
  • Police charged two students after a social media threat from an IDEA Tres Lagos student led to a lockdown at Edinburg North High School+ Edinburg North student Jared Jerome Juarez shared the threat, which prompted concerned parents to call the school.  KURV

  • The Edinburg CISD Board of Trustees placed Superintendent Mario Salinas on five days of paid administrative leave and issued a reprimand—after a May 21 meeting where parents raised concerns over a student gun incident at Edinburg North High School and other issues including previous criticisms from a May 13 meeting.  The Edinburg Advocate

  • Emergency management officials in Edinburg are urging residents to prepare ahead of hurricane season by creating evacuation plans, gathering disaster supplies, reviewing flood insurance, documenting possessions, and reinforcing their homes—following NOAA recommendations.  The Edinburg Advocate
