  • On Friday, thousands gathered at Isla Blanca Park and the South Texas shoreline to watch SpaceX launch its 12th Starship rocket; visitors from near and far experienced a powerful liftoff that energized local onlookers.  KRGV
  • Aquiles Garza, president of Bebo Distributing (48 years in trade), praised RioPlex and its founder Joaquin Spamer at an event in Mission on May 21. He said lemon and lime growers from Michoacán may soon gain U.S. distributors if their products meet USDA standards.  Rio Grande Guardian

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Mike Willis of South Texas Manufacturers Association said a McAllen Workforce Solutions report shows 500,000 fewer workers from March 2025 due to cuts in manufacturing and oil & gas, though construction jobs rose (according to the report). EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jose Ruben Adame, longtime La Joya ISD Fine Arts director, will be inducted into the Phi Beta Mu Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame for his decades of service to music education. The honor reflects his commitment since 1982 in growing student music programs including mariachi.  MyRGV.com
  • Students from McAllen Elementary served as jurors and legal teams in a mock trial of the Big Bad Wolf at Sam Houston Elementary, guided by lawyers and University of Texas Rio Grande Valley students (the event is a first-of-its-kind experience in Hidalgo County).  KRGV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • NOAA predicts a below-normal Atlantic hurricane season this year, but local emergency managers recommend residents prepare hurricane kits and secure their homes before the season begins on June 1. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In March, the Texas Workforce Commission released its Labor Market and Employment reports showing a seasonally adjusted 4.3% state unemployment rate and 46,800 new non-agricultural jobs plus a local rate of 4.9% in Edinburg. Workforce Solutions held an employer workshop in Edinburg on March 5 plus attended a regional summit in McAllen on March 6.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • On Friday, May 22, Edinburg honored 90 fallen service members at a Memorial Day ceremony outside city hall that featured a musical tribute, a 21-gun salute, and names read by American Legion post members.  KRGV
