- ➤ South Texas Health System is hosting a clothing drive to collect new or gently used business attire for South Texas College graduates who need professional clothing for interviews and starting careers. The drive runs now through May 21 and local donors can drop off contributions at designated sites in Edinburg—at the Administration Office, Behavioral Office, and Regional Operations Center Lobby. - ➤ The Edinburg Police Department is accepting applications for its Teen Police Academy at the CPL Derek Hernandez Police Training Facility—offering hands-on lessons in patrol, special operations, and crime scene investigation for high school students aged 14 to 17 during sessions from June 16–20 and June 23–27 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.—while applications are due by June 10 and enrollment is free. - ➤ Edinburg will hold a Memorial Day Commemorative Ceremony at 10 a.m. on May 23 at the Municipal Auditorium to honor fallen service members with musical tributes, a Battlefield Cross presentation by the Edinburg High School JROTC Honor Guard, and a reading of names by American Legion Post 408 — a moment that includes silence for Dolia Gonzalez, mother of Sgt. - ➤ A ribbon cutting was held Monday for the new Jackson Hike + Bike Trail that connects Edinburg and McAllen with a 1.5 mile, 10-foot wide path linking Bicentennial Boulevard and 2nd Street trails to the Jackson Road junction. Construction is expected to last 15 months and cost over $2.6 million as the project continues to expand the local trail network. KRGV
- ➤ The Hidalgo County Housing Authority and McAllen Housing Authority announced 50 FYI housing vouchers for former foster youth aged 18 to 24 to support their transition to independent living—subsidized rent will help recipients focus on education, employment, or training. - ➤ This May, PSJA Health Services will host low-cost vaccination clinics in Pharr at 1229 South Veterans Boulevard on May 13th and 15th from 5 to 7:30 p.m., while Stephen F. Austin Middle School in San Juan will hold a clinic on May 14th from 2:30 to 4:15 p.m. A final clinic on May 28th at 805 West Ridge Road in San Juan will offer free or low-cost vaccines for students ages 9 to 14 with parental consent — helping overcome financial barriers to care.
