CRIME NEWS

  • Eighteen-year-old Kinzey Jay Lira was arrested at Edinburg North High School on Tuesday after a student reported an unloaded gun modified for automatic fire and THC vapes were found, and he now faces state charges with a $100,000 bond and federal charges that could lead to up to five years in prison—investigators are also reviewing his recent mental health discharge and vape sales history.  FOX RGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Edinburg CISD will honor its Class of 2025 with graduation ceremonies at Bert Ogden Arena on May 31 and June 1. Doors open an hour before each event — no tickets are required and ceremonies will be streamed live.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • The Dustin M. Sekula Memorial Library has free educational programs for children throughout May at its Edinburg location at 1906 S. Closner Blvd.—the schedule includes Toddler Time on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. (May 6, 13, 20, and 27), Basic Computer Classes on May 1 and 22 at 6 p.m., Family Storytime on May 15 at 6 p.m., Homeschool Hour on May 7 and 14 at 11 a.m., Preschool Story Time on Fridays at 10 a.m. (May 9, 16, 23, and 30), and STEM Explorers on May 8 and 29 at 6 p.m. Families are urged to arrive early as space is limited.  The Edinburg Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Texas Senate passed a bill that would provide state funding for flood control and water reclamation projects and sent it to Governor Abbott’s desk. Sponsored by Senator Juan 'Chuy' Hinojosa, the bill makes Hidalgo County’s Delta Reclamation Project eligible for state funds to repurpose stormwater.  KURV
