COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Edinburg’s Citrus Theatre reopened after closing in the 90s with an invite-only event that brought back cherished memories for attendees. The theater will host a comedy show on May 9 — organizers provided ticket details.  KRGV

CRIME NEWS

  • Former Edcouch city manager Victor Hugo De La Cruz pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to defraud the United States in a kickback scheme involving former alderman Rene A. Flores and two $3,000 payments to Pink Ape Media in July and September 2019 + his sentencing is scheduled for July 10 + Flores is set to be sentenced on June 3.  MyRGV.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UTRGV students in the Puentes Museum Internship and Fellowship program learned on April 15 that DOGE cut a $750,000 federal IMLS grant—leaving 20 students without the promised support for museum internships. They plan to appeal by May 12 and seek alternative funding as the program was meant to cover housing, transportation and work expenses through October.  MyRGV.com
  • Edinburg CISD will move all remaining students from Canterbury Elementary to the Edinburg Recreation Center on Monday after E. coli was found at the school—more than 260 students had already been relocated to Freddy Gonzalez Elementary earlier this week, and the change will last through the end of the school year. This move aims to speed up cleanup and give families peace of mind.  KURV
  • Legislators held a hearing this week on a bill that would change the STAAR Test used in Texas public schools. State Rep Brad Buckley said the test will be split into three parts—at the beginning, middle and end of the year so that teachers and parents can track progress.  KURV

  • The City of Edinburg distributed sandbags yesterday at the Edinburg Service Center (1201 N. Doolittle Road) during a drive-thru event from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. to help residents and local businesses prepare for forecasted rainfall after severe flood damage from March 28.  The Edinburg Advocate
