Edcouch’s former city manager Victor Hugo De La Cruz pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the U.S. and will be sentenced in July after being arrested with former Mayor Pro-Tem Rene Adan Flores in September 2024 on federal bribery charges involving kickback payments linked to city marketing contracts.

Edinburg CISD announced that all remaining students at Canterbury Elementary School will be moved to the Edinburg Recreation Center starting on Monday, May 5 due to E. coli found in parts of the campus.

The district said the measure will allow for swift repairs and maintain a safe learning environment—students will follow regular drop-off and pick-up routines.

Valley voters will cast ballots this Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Hidalgo County with 26 polling locations and Cameron County with 54—with contests in city commissions, school boards and local propositions on the ballot.

On Thursday, Hidalgo County leaders opened the new seven-floor courthouse in a ceremony; the nearly 400,000 square-foot building was built with modern technology over four years with $192 million in spending.

Judge Richard Cortez said extra parking will be added while the old courthouse is torn down + further safety improvements are planned.
