  • Sonia Dempsey is hosting the annual Sunflower 5K (a tribute to her late husband Chad) on Sunday, May 3 at Edinburg Municipal Park to raise funds for scholarships and music programs. The event supports local students and celebrates his lasting legacy.  KRGV
  • Tania Chavez Camacho, president of La Unión del Pueblo Entero, urges local officials to work with LUPE in San Juan to preserve farmworker history by reimagining public spaces + launching new confidential support for survivors as part of strengthened safeguarding efforts.  Rio Grande Guardian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Monday, April 27, 2026, the PSJA ISD school board appointed Romeo Robles to fill the trustee seat left vacant by Diana Serna's resignation due to health concerns. Robles, who previously served as the district's CTE coordinator, will serve until the November general election.  MyRGV.com
  • Edinburg CISD held its first budget workshop for the 2026-27 year on April 28 reviewing declining enrollment and funding pressures. The board, which kept taxes from rising, also discussed cost controls—exploring staffing ratios and revenue from district parking lots.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • DHR Health and the University of Houston are planning a regional campus for the Fertitta College of Medicine in north McAllen — the new $15 million Medical Research and Education Center will serve as a research hub and facilitate clinical training for local students in the coming years.  Rio Grande Guardian

  • Region One Education Service Center is hosting its 4th Annual Mental Health Awareness Community Day on Saturday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Region One Conference Center (1900 West Schunior Street) to offer mental health resources for families.  KRGV
  • With less than three days remaining for free screenings, H-E-B pharmacist Kassandra De La Garza advises Rio Grande Valley residents on preventing pre-diabetes. The campaign, sponsored by Prime Health & South Texas Health System, offers free tests and helpful guidance in April.  KRGV
