BUSINESS NEWS

  • H-E-B at 2700 W. Freddy Gonzalez Drive in Edinburg began major remodeling that will expand the store to nearly 110,000 square feet and add more curbside parking — it will remain open during the work. The project is estimated at about $33.9 million and will finish early 2027 — officials said updates will be shared as the work continues.  MyRGV.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown Edinburg’s Historic Citrus Theater, once the Valley’s favorite movie house, reopens as Citrus Live on May 1 after being renovated by Renee Sanchez Leal and Nick Cantu. Local documentarian Joshua Kennedy has gathered stories and artifacts to feature in a documentary at the grand opening — tying the town's past with its future.  KRGV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Edinburg Solid Waste Management will host its annual Road to Recycling Tire Collection event on Saturday, April 26th from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at three sites—Edinburg Landfill, Bicentennial Park and Recycling Center. Residents with a valid photo ID and matching utility bill may drop off up to 20 tires at each location.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • The American Lung Association released its annual 'State of the Air' report and gave Hidalgo and Cameron counties a B for few high ozone days but a failing grade on particle pollution— the report ranked the Brownsville-Harlingen-Raymondville area as 16th worst in the nation for year-round particle pollution.  KURV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TxDOT is set to buy land for the proposed State Highway 68—designed to link U.S. 83 and U.S. 281 in Hidalgo County. Next month the department will hire a company to negotiate the purchase of the land while allowing landowners to counter state offers.  KURV
  • In Pharr on April 24th, local officials and industry leaders met to discuss plans by the Commerce Department to end the trade agreement with Mexican tomato exporters, a move that could drive tomato prices up by 50% and affect over 32,000 jobs. They warned that ending the agreement and imposing a 20% tariff may raise food costs and strain South Texas families—legislators are now being urged to support measures that keep the deal in place.  MyRGV.com
  • On Wednesday, the Texas Senate passed SB 23 by a vote of 30 to 1 that would raise the homestead exemption for seniors + people with disabilities from $110,000 to $200,000 if voters approve a constitutional amendment on the November ballot. Voters will decide in November, and the new limits will take effect if the amendment is approved.  KURV

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Edinburg Parks and Rec Center at 315 E. Mark S. Peña Drive will host the 2025 Amateur Boxing Championships this weekend with over 400 youth boxers aged 8 to 16 from across South Texas competing in hundreds of matches. The three-day event starts today with an opening ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and runs through Sunday with bouts ending in the afternoon.  MyRGV.com
